Four Million Hours LTI Free
March 20, 2008
Bantrel Constructors Co. reached a major safety milestone at Edmonton’s Petro-Canada Refinery Conversion Project (RCP). The nearly 3,800 men and women who work on site celebrated four million work hours without a lost-time injury on March 14.
That’s quite a feat considering BCC employees are onsite 24-hours a day, frequently working in extreme winter weather conditions.
So how did they do it?
Ted Crawford, HSE Manager for the site, says an informed workforce is a safe workforce. “Communication is one of the keys to ensuring everyone goes home safely,” he says.
One way to keep employees in the safety loop is to send out a safety bulletin every morning. This allows employees to all hear the same message and learn how to do the best job in the safest manner possible.
“Safety of our employees is our first priority,” explains Crawford and as such the team on site is well trained with both safety and medical experience
The RCP team has encouraged a safety culture by developing Health, Safety, Environment and Behaviour-based Safety Champion programs for managers. Managers step into a safety leadership role onsite by leading certain safety initiatives.
